The ‘Crowdfunding project of the week’ series is where we highlight some of the hottest campaigns from sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. There’s plenty of innovation to be found, but you will also come across a bunch of unnecessary stuff. We know you don’t have time to be weeding out the culprits, so we are here to do it for you.

This week we are taking a look at Remix IO, an Android device that promises to function as three – a gaming console, a PC and a smart TV. This 4K-powered gadget runs on Android Nougat, but the software has been customized to better suit your needs. There are two modes: TV mode and PC mode (we will explain more about this in the sections below).

Specs include an octa-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, [email protected] support, HDMI, VGA, 4 USB 2.0 ports, a microSD slot, an audio jack, an Ethernet port and more. All in a compact box that will look great in any home theater system.

What makes this product special is not only the power of Android, but how it adapts to your needs. Let’s take a look at each of its functions.

Set-top box

The Remix IO has a TV mode that they promise will “make it easier to be a couch potato”. It arranges your content to fit best on the large screen. The best part? You are not limited to apps – you can use both Android and Android TV applications here.

PC

Switch to PC mode and you will find a whole other environment to work with. Remix OS was made to turn Android into an actual PC alternative. It uses resize-able windows, PC-like multi-tasking, a start menu, a taskbar and keyboard shortcuts, among other features.

Gaming console

Android has a huge collection of games, something Jide Tech is taking advantage of with the Remix OS. The device will pretty much support all these games, just like any other Android device would. What makes it special is its gamepad/keyboard support.

Remix IO has a special software that will make it simple to map any touch controls to a physical controller or keyboard. You can see all the details in the video.
